UARS MLS V4 Data Inspection Summary

The following table gives access to comments and statistics of interest to potential users of UARS MLS atmospheric data. The information is arranged by UARS month (roughly every 35 days, with MLS either viewing mostly north or south). Table Usage:
  • Users can click on the name of the parameter of interest (e.g. Temp.) to access general information that might be available in addition to the monthly summaries (e.g. plots of differences between V4 and V3 data for several years).
    Clicking on the UARS months (e.g. 91_07) links the user to a color-coded calendar regarding MLS operations for the year of interest.
  • The monthly information is obtained by clicking on the ''grades'' given to each month for each parameter (e.g. A or B, see legend below). This information is generally formatted in the same way for each parameter, as input by specific members of the MLS team, and includes a comment field (which may be blank, if nothing special was deemed worth noting for that month/parameter), further actions recommended (regarding issues in V4 data - a blank here does not mean that improvements are not possible in V5 data...), summary information on data quality and number of good, bad, etc... major frames for this month, as well as statistics of data spikes. These data spikes generally do not cover more than 0.1 to 1 % of the data, and they are plotted and tabulated as a matter of record. They are not necessarily an indication of unexplained or unexpected bad data, since the atmosphere is not expected to behave in a random, gaussian manner; explanations may be written down for certain behaviors, but some apparent anomalies will require further investigation.













    Table Legend:
  • A = All or vast majority (generally > 99%) of profiles are deemed useful for scientific analysis.
  • B = All or vast majority (generally > 99%) of profiles are deemed useful for scientific analysis, but the (parameter-dependent) comment field should be read for potential issue(s).
  • N = No data exist for this month/parameter
  • blank = Data not yet thoroughly examined by MLS team.
