UARS MLS Seasonal Mean GW
Variances in December-February
UARS MLS observed Arctic winter stratospheric gravity wave variances,
at altitudes ~28, 33, 38, 43, 48, 53, 61, and 80 km (channels 1-8). The
4-point MLS limb-scan data averaged on 10 degree by 5 degree longitude-latitude
grids during December-January-February of 1991-1994 are used to make this map.
The instrument noise has been removed and no data are at latitudes higher than
80N/80S. These maps show that mountain waves over the southern Greenland,
Scandinavia, central Siberian, and Queen Elizabeth Islands are the main
sources of gravity waves at high latitudes. In tropical regions, convections
at south Africa, Australia and south America are the major gravity wave sources.
