These slides are prepared every two weeks (excepting holidays/vacations) and presented at the MLS team meetings to provide an update on stratospheric and UTLS meteorological conditions and how they affect the MLS composition measurements. They focus mainly on the winter stratospheric polar vortices, and include:

  • Update on temperatures and polar vortex strength from the MERRA-2 reanalysis and GEOS-5 FPIT meteorological products.
  • Time series, maps, and cross-sections of MLS species involved in lower stratospheric polar processing (e.g., Temperature, N2O, H2O, HNO3, HCl, ClO, and O3), including as a function of equivalent latitude and potential temperature (thus showing a vortex-centered view) and vortex averaged quantities.
  • Vortex averaged times series of H_2O and CO showing evolution in the upper stratosphere and lower mesosphere.
  • Maps of MLS O3, HNO3, H2O, and CO showing variations in the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere and their relationship to the stratospheric "sub-vortex" and the tropopause.
